Akari Lighting & Technology Corporation and The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) have sealed a groundbreaking partnership to build the “Home of the UAAP,” a state-of-the-art sports facility located along Amang Rodriguez Avenue in Pasig City.
The contract signing took place on August 20, 2024, at the Atencio-Libunao Hall, UP Diliman, marking a new chapter in Philippine collegiate sports.
This historic collaboration aims to provide a dedicated venue for UAAP events, supporting the league’s growth and its commitment to grassroots sports development.
The 1.8-hectare project will feature a world-class arena with a seating capacity of 6,000, set to host UAAP basketball and volleyball games, except for those that require a larger venue. However, the arena will not only cater to the mentioned sports but will also be open to other UAAP sports and leagues.
Akari CEO Christopher Tiu highlighted the motivation behind the partnership.
“The partnership is driven by a mutual desire for both parties to collaborate and provide UAAP fans with a regular venue where games can be enjoyed and sportsmanship can be fostered.”
Tiu emphasized that the arena will not just be a sports venue but ‘a lifestyle complex combining sports development with family and student recreation.’
UAAP Season 87 Chairman and UP President Attorney. Angelo “Jijil” Jimenez, on the other hand, expressed gratitude for Akari’s support.
“After years of dreaming and planning, the UAAP finally has a place to call home. This facility will stand as a testament to the spirit of unity and excellence that the UAAP represents,” Jimenez said.
Furthermore, UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene “Rebo” Saguisag Jr. emphasized the significance of the new facility.
“The Home of the UAAP is not just for the league but for the student-athletes who represent the heart of the UAAP. This is their home, a place where they can compete, grow, and thrive,” Saguisag said.
The construction of the UAAP Arena is scheduled to be completed within three years, with the goal of becoming the premier venue for amateur sports in the Philippines and a hub for the next generation of student-athletes.
